PostHeaderIcon German Rap is Back...

Herr von Grau

Not long ago in a small country in Central Europe, a nation of philosophers and poets, kids were looking over the "Great Lake", looking westwards to the Americas, where people had been rhythmically ranting lyrics over sampled beats - and they became curious if the same principle would work in their native tongue as well. One of the pioneers of German Rap were "Die Fantastischen 4" and "Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt". Selling stats and popular opinion agreed: Rap in German was not only working very well, but it was alive and quickly kicking its way into the 3rd millenium. What followed was an outburst of very innovative rappers and bands like "Absolute Beginner", "Eins Zwo" and many many more, most of them from a middle-class burgeois upbringing. After the first wave of mass popularity however, kids from socially disrupted and migrant background wanted to rake in their share as well, half-eloquently stammering about "life in the ghetto", "ho's & bitches" and "da money", identifying with the pledge of the victimized and marginalized from the American Coast of their choice.
German Rap had been stuck in this muck for quite a while but now very slowly it seems to shake itself out of the dust with renewed vigor and artistic bravery, displayed by artists like "Alligatoah" or "Herr von Grau", who after his first Album "Blumenbeet" has recently prepared a second longplayer called "Heldenplätze", of which we want to present you a snippet today.
